Credit to Marco Sturm. This Bruins team is incredibly well organized through the first 3
games. The small quick passes on the breakout and through the neutral are well supported
and very smooth. The additional low swing man on the Powerplay regroup / entry has been
the most effective and consistent PP zone entry the Bruins have had in quite some time. In
comparison to the Sabres tonight the Bruins were head and shoulders above their Atlantic
division foes in organization, player support and coaching. The Bruins were excellent in the
first, attacking pressure suffocated the disorganized Sabres, and caused many turnovers
from their D. Only issue with this period was they couldn’t extend the lead beyond one goal.
Slower start to the 2nd due to back-to-back penalty kill situations, but the PK was effective,
and Minten produced the best opportunity on yet another 2-1 with Jeannot just missing
glove side. A much needed second goal for the Bruins by Kastelic, a reward for his high
effort on the PK and heavy forecheck in the 2nd.
They had to expect an increased effort from the Sabres in the 3rd after a brutal looking first
and an ineffective yet improved second. The Bruins inability to blow the game open thanks
in part to solid goaltending from Alex Lyon, allowed for the Sabres to draw to within one and
make for an exciting last 2 minutes. With numerous chances to close it out with an empty
netter the lack of scoring urgency with the EN didn’t come back to bite this time and with 2
seconds left, an excellent play o, the draw from McAvoy cleared the puck and led to the
Kuraly goal. Swayman was very boring in net in all the best ways. His rebound control is an
underappreciated asset; he was in control of the crease absorbing shots not allowing for
second opportunities and a freak deflection was the only way to beat him. My player of the
game was Haverhill native and former Northeastern Husky, Jordan Harris. His overall strong
play over 16:25 of TOI highlighted with the excellent primary assist on the Zacha goal,
Harris filled in nicely for H. Lindholm who is out day-to-day with an LBI (unrelated to the
patella injury from last season).
The Bruins will play again on Monday at 1pm at the TD Garden against another division
opponent, the Tampa Bay Lightning.
